I continue to learn from the land of the Fruit, Nut and Berry Orchard. I planted the East Orchard in the fall of 2013 and spring of 2014. As I dug holes for the trees, bushes, vines, and trellises, I had plenty of opportunity to view the soil profile. There is 6-10 inches of rich topsoil, a small band of small round rocks, and then a nice coarse sand. This is an ideal growing medium! The land was an hardwood savanna of mostly oak trees. This land was part of about a half mile band between the Elkhart Prairie to the east and the Elkhart River to the west.
